Removing the Disqus comments
When I started the blog, comments were an important feature. Every blog should have a comment section for each page.
Not being well into internet technologies back then, and happy to have some solution, I added Disqus comments. It was free to start with, easy to integrate, and there were occasionally some comments on blog posts. And quite a few on my BitBake guide.
So I was happy, then I stopped thinking about it.
Why I’m removing Disqus
I usually browse the web with privacy-focused browsers, and I do not see a lot of advertisements. Now, I was shocked when I recently saw my page on a mobile phone browser with default settings.
I am/was aware that Disqus shows ads in its free plan, and I am fine with that. But what they show is too much. It ruins the page.
I am not sure if it always has been like this, or if they changed over the years. However, since this is not a very much used feature, I will remove it.
I am aware Disqus needs to make money, but they do not have a pricing plan that fits this page. It starts with $10/month, and I do not see the value in adding another subscription to my expenses. Especially since there are better, more privacy-focused solutions for a small blog like this.
The future
I have to put this blog on a domain I own, then I will have more freedom to move pages. This page started on Bitbucket, was moved to GitLab, and when I did that, I said the next move would happen to my own domain. So I need a domain. Then I’ll move the blog to a place where I can implement the comment system I want.
I’m not sure when this will happen, but it will.
